SOIL SAMPLE EXTRACTION

In order to get the best results in our soil testing lab, the sample needs to be free of all organic materials.

Items needed:

Clean shovel, heavy garbage bag medium size, heavy box or plastic storage box that holds 8 liters (2 gallons) with lid closed.

  1. Use a clean shovel to remove all organic materials from an area in the center of the future road bed. See the soil horizon picture below.  You are trying to be in the A and E horizon layers.  They will be characterized by no black or dark peat spongy type soil.  More firm packed and possibly with a little gravels.
  2. You should try to make a 3ft x 3ft square removed of organics.
  3.  Then prepare your box by lining with a large bag (heavy garbage bags are good).  Leave enough above box to be able to tie tightly, so no moisture escapes in transport.
  4.  Shovel about 8 liters (2 Gallons) of none-organic soil into the lined box.
  5.  Tie tightly and close box with tape.

O – decomposing bits and pieces of plant material

A – organic material mixed with minerals; usually the darker layer

E – sand and silt particles that are resistant to decomposition; typically lighter than the A horizon because of leaching

B – accumulation of silicate, clay, iron, aluminum, carbonates, and or gypsum

C – broken down bedock (parent material); has not been affected much by soil formation

R – unweathered bedrock
